Lady Skater Dress # 3 – Black Roses

Today I am wearing my newest Skater dress, in a lovely soft fabric from Girl Charlee.  I am wearing this pattern all week for the #OWOP challenge (I’ll blog all my outfits for the week tomorrow) and its been a nice change to get out of my lazy uniform of jeans.

Lady Skater Dress

I used my adjusted pattern so this sewed up very quickly and it ticks all the boxes for me for smart casual wear.

My adjustments are: a cheaters small bust adjustment by shaving 1/2″ off the side seam top of bodice and top of sleeve and slightly straightening the front waist bodice curve (smaller busts dont need as much length in the front), plus a sway back adjustment for the back.  The overall length of the bodice was shortened as well roughly 1″.  I added a couple of inches of length to the skirt to bring it to my preferred length.  The extra stretch in this fabric gives this version the best fit yet.  The pattern recommends a knit with at least 40% stretch and good recovery and now having made this up in a variety of fabrics I really agree.

Lady Skater Dress

I’ve made a heap of uber girly floral dresses and I am ready to move onto something else now…

You certainly have got the fit right with this dress and it will work well for the warmer months as well. I look forward to seeing how you have styled the 3 dresses for the week!

I think I need to try the Lady Skater again. My first attempt was with ponti…what was I thinking! That stuff has hardly any stretch at all! Time to try again hey? I did struggle with the neckband though…it feel SO short.

    • For sure try again in something stretchier. My first skater was in a double knit with hardly any stretch and it was wayyyyyy too small and I had the same thing with the neckband – it was too short because my fabric didn’t stretch enough. In a stretchier fabric the neckband feels short but you need to stretch it as you sew it quite alot around the curvier parts like the front curve so that it sits flat when you are done. It almost feels gathered when you are done but once you press it it all goes flat and the neckband just sits well.
